The Highland Park House Tour: A Heartwarming Success Story

On a sun-drenched day in Highland Park, Pittsburgh, the vibrant community came alive with the buzz of excitement and connection. The Highland Park House Tour, a labor of love orchestrated by Emily Askin and her partner, Elisa, was not only a resounding success but also a testament to the power of community spirit.

The journey began with a spark of inspiration during a casual conversation between Emily and Elisa, already a key member of the Highland Park Community Council. They discussed the possibility of reviving the beloved house tour, which had been on hiatus since 2018. With the previous organizers having retired, Emily and Elisa took the helm, guided by the wisdom and resources generously shared by their predecessors. Armed with a treasure trove of research, spreadsheets, and even some memorabilia from past tours, they embarked on a mission to create an unforgettable experience.

This year’s event surpassed all expectations, raising nearly three times the initial goal for the Highland Park Community Council. Over 650 tickets were sold, drawing visitors from across Pittsburgh and beyond. The neighborhood streets were filled with people basking in the warm sun, exploring the beautifully curated homes, and engaging with the community.

One of the most delightful aspects of the day was the multitude of connections made. Emily, biking through the neighborhood, witnessed heartwarming interactions, from individuals reminiscing about childhood homes to new friendships being forged. These moments encapsulated the essence of community—people coming together to share stories, nostalgia, and joy.

Local businesses also thrived amidst the excitement. Collaborations, like the one with the new Bryant St. Tavern, formerly Park Bruges, added a special touch. With a "rosé all day" theme, the tavern was bustling with patrons, marking another victory for the neighborhood.

The tour itself was a revelation. Homeowners graciously opened their doors, welcoming hundreds of visitors who marveled at the architecture and personal stories behind each residence. The atmosphere was filled with positivity and gratitude, as neighbors and visitors alike celebrated the charm and history of Highland Park.

The event culminated in a beautiful gathering at the Highland House penthouse, where hosts, organizers, and volunteers reflected on the day’s success. The overwhelming feedback was one of appreciation and happiness. The tour not only showcased the neighborhood’s beauty, but also reinforced a sense of unity and shared purpose.

For Emily Askin and Elisa, this experience was more than just an event—it was a reminder of the power of community and the impact of collective effort. As they look forward to future tours, the Highland Park House Tour stands as a beacon of what can be achieved when people come together with passion and dedication.
